Near the end of Unit 2, discuss the differences between Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Rite churches. Note that Eastern Orthodox churches are not Catholic. All Eastern Rite churches are Catholic, which means they accept the authority of the pope and follow the teachings of the Catholic Church.
The Eastern Rite Catholic Churches include Alexandrian (Coptic, Ethiopian), Antiochen (Syrian, Chaldean, Marionite), Byzantine (Melkite), and Armenian. Have students research to find out which of these churches are present in the United States and which of these exist in their area. Guided use of the Internet will be helpful as well as use of an area phone book for local research.
