Talk about things students have in common with people of other lands. On the chalkboard list foods and the countries they come from such as:

Guatemala beans, corn, squash, tortillas

Kenya cassava, sugar cane, potatoes, corn (maize), fish

Philippines rice, chicken, coconuts, bananas, anchovies

China rice, noodles, sugar beets, soybeans, cabbage

Note that families around the world may prepare foods differently, yet we eat many of the same foods. We are all dependent upon adequate rainfall to provide good harvests.
