Animals are part of God's creation. St. Francis of Assisi showed compassion for animals. Have students suggest ways they can show compassion for animals in their homes, neighborhood, and community. List their suggestions on the chalkboard and then discuss them. Suggestions might include:

feeding my pet every day
•
playing with my pet or a neighbor's pet that might be lonely
•
putting food out for birds in winter
•
being kind to animals and not teasing or hurting them
•
walking a neighbor's dog
•
protecting pets from bad weather
•
taking shredded papers to an animal shelter for litter
