Catholic Social Teaching - Call to Family, Community, and Participation

Catholic tradition teaches that the human person is both sacred and social. We believe that the family is the "domestic church," which means that it has a mission to the community and to the world. God's grace is at work within the family, helping its members set out each day on the way of love.

We need to approach the topic of family with great sensitivity. As you are aware, the word family is subject to many definitions today. Some children may be from single-parent families. Others may live in blended or extended families. Some children are being raised by grandparents.

Because of the mobility of today's families, some children may seldom have the opportunity to spend time with grandparents or other older members of their extended families. For this reason, it is important to become as familiar as possible with the family setting of each child in your care. When speaking of family, try to give examples that reflect the different kinds of families represented in your group. Stress that regardless of the family structure, the same principles of love and respect for the members of one's family apply to all of us.

Personal Reflection

spacer How has my own family experience influenced the way I reach out to others?
What can I do to strengthen the bonds within my extended family?

Action Opportunity

Help the children learn about the many people involved in ministry at their parish. Write the different roles on the chalkboard: greeters, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, ushers, music ministers, and so on. Try to match a name and face to someone in each of these roles. Point out that they are part of the parish family. If possible, invite one of these ministers to come and talk with your group about his or her ministry.

Quick Take

Have the children name some of the people in their lives. These can include family members, friends, or neighbors. Explain that a "neighbor" is not only the person who lives next door, but includes many others. Invite the children to name favorite people in their lives and to share why those people are important to them.
