Suggestions for Movement

The following actions are designed to accompany the Blest Are We Unit Songs. They include the program theme song and a unit song from each of grades 1-4. The movement suggestions allow children to physically express both the energetic and the prayerful qualities of the songs.


"Blest Are We" (Program Song)

Invite one child to help you demonstrate the following actions.

	Refrain: (Stand facing your partner).
	•		Blest: pat own knees.
	•		Are: clap your own hands.
	•		We: pat partners hands.
	•		Holy children of: bow to your partner.
	•		Light are we!: join hands, change places with your partner.
	Repeat pattern throughout the refrain using these spoken cues. Measure 1 - pat, clap, friend. Measure 2 - bow and up. Measure 3 & 4 – join hands and then change places.
	Verse:
	•		Cantor sings: Children gently sway (left, right, left, right).
	•		We are called: children cup hand around mouth in "calling" action.
	•		Called to serve: extend hands at waist level, palms up.
	* Note: Movement begins the second time the refrain is sung at the beginning of the song. Always encourage the children to sing along!

Grade Level 1
"Come All You People" (Unit 2)

Children stand scattered around the room. A "leader" (teacher should model the first time) stands in front.

	•		As the song is sung the first time, the leader sings and motions as above. Children remain in scattered positions, listening.
	•		Second time - children walk to the beat from their scattered position into a circle in the middle of the room, singing.
	•		Third time – stand in circle, gently rock back and forth, singing.
	•		Fourth time – join hands and walk around the circle.
	•		Fifth time - four steps into the circle, rock left, rock right. - 4 steps out of the circle, rock left, rock right. - 4 steps in, rock left, rock right. - 4 steps out, raise hands slowly on "Lord."
	Use this song to gather within the classroom. You may want to change the words of the last line to fit the activity. (example: "Come now to listen and pray" ). Allow children to take turns being the "leader."

Grade Level 2
"Be Merciful, O Lord" (Unit 2)

Refrain:

	•		Be: Place four fingers up, with index finger at lips. Gently move hand forward and away from lips.
	•		Merciful: Place both hands in front of you, palms facing out, hands slightly curved. Make a motion as though stroking someone.
	•		Lord: Make an "L" with the right hand, place on left shoulder and pull across to the right hip.
	•		We: Touch right index finger to right shoulder and move in an arc to left shoulder.
	•		Sinned. Touch index fingers in front of you, palms facing in, other fingers closed. Simultaneously circle right hand clockwise and left hand counterclockwise.
	During the verses children sit with heads bowed.

Grade Level 3
"Gather Round This Table" (Unit 4)

Formation: Children stand with a partner, scattered in room. They will move into a circle, but always with their partner.

	Verse 1:
	•		Children stand with their partner, scattered around the room. As the verse begins "Come gather round the table," children walk the beat with their partner and move into a large circle in the center of the room, as though gathering around a table. On the last phrase of the verse "Yes, all are welcomed here." children turn and face their partner.
	Refrain:
	•		Blessed are they who will feast: pat knees, clap, right hand pats partner's right hand.
	•		In the reign of God: clap own hands, left hand claps partner's left hand, clap, pat both hands of partner, clap hands.
	•		Blessed are they who will share: link arms with partner, walk in a complete circle.
	•		Share the bread of life: ("swing your partner").
	•		Blessed are they who are least: pat knees, clap, right hands pats partner's right hand.
	•		In the Reign of God: clap own hands, left hand claps partner's left hand, clap hands, pat both hands of partner, clap hands.
	•		They shall rejoice in the feast of: link arms with partner, walk in a complete circle ("swing your partner").
	•		Life: Everyone in circle joins hands again (encourage children to hold out the second "life" as they do on the recording).
	Verses 2 and 3:
	•		Invite individual children to sing verses along with cantor or with instrumental track. Continue with movement for refrain.

Grade Level 4
"Hands of Healing" (Unit 4)

Formation: Partners, facing one another.

	Refrain:
	•		Let our hands be: Pat knees, clap, pat partner's hands, clap.
	•		Hands of healing: Pat partners hands twice, pat back of partners hands twice.
	•		Let our words be: Pat knees, clap, pat partner's hands, clap.
	•		clear: Right hands to lips then gently bring down.
	•		true: left hands to lips then gently ring down.
	•		In our work God's: Partners place one fist on top of each other's on the beat.
	•		love: cross hands over chest.
	•		revealing: Lower hands and open at waist level.
	•		Just: Partners place right fists on top of each other's.
	•		Gentle: Partners place left hand on right shoulder of partner.
	•		All we do: Pat shoulder and tap fists three times on the beat.
	Verses:
	•		Perform the same actions as each phrase is repeated.
