Singing Praises to God
St. Cecilia has long been recognized as the patron of musicians, poets, and singers. Very little is actually known about this fifth century saint. Legend has it that Cecilia was condemned to death for refusing to worship false gods. As she lay dying for three days, she continued to sing praises to God. Legends tend to draw heroes and heroines closer to us. They express truths that stimulate our faith.
In the Old Testament, Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, is described as a musician. She played her tambourine and composed The Song of Miriam, "Sing to the Lord..." (Ex 15:21) as the Israelites crossed the Red Sea to freedom.
King David played his lyre and has many psalms attributed to him. The psalms are beautiful hymns of praise that continue to enrich our liturgies today.
Find examples of other saints who are known for composing songs, playing musical instruments, or singing praises to God. Share your findings with those within your music ministry.
