Holy People—Role Models

We are called to be holy. We are called by God.

Mother Teresa; Bishop James Anthony Walsh, MM; Sr. Ita Ford; Sr. Maureen Clarke; Sr. Dorothy Kazel; and Jean Donovan served the poor and needy in other countries. The four churchwomen in El Salvador were martyred for these activities.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Dorothy Day, and Fr. Solanus Casey reached out to the poor and victims of injustice in the United States. Dr. King was murdered for his efforts.

Sr. Thea Bowman and Pierre Toussaint served not only people of color, like themselves, but all people who needed guidance and support.

Blessed Julian of Norwich listened to the needs of others and prayed for them. She wrote of God's love for all of creation.

These ordinary people chose to live extraordinary lives. Some were murdered for their efforts on behalf of peace and justice. Others lived out the time they had in continued service to God and neighbor.

We are all called to be holy people. Our lives can be holy whether we become involved in publicized good works or quietly pursue a life of holiness.
