Mary in Spring

Celebrating Mary in Spring
Background Notes

May has traditionally been one of the months set aside for devotion to Mary. Many communities celebrate a May crowning of Mary’s statue and other devotions in honor of the Mother of God. Mary loved and trusted God. By her 'yes’ she helped fulfill God’s plan of salvation for us. Mary is a model for us to imitate.

"Queen of Peace" Prayer Celebration Notes

Focus Living as Mary did—as people of peace and love

Materials Needed Prayer table, Bible, candle, statue or picture of Mary, music

Reading

Isaiah 61:10–11

Music "I Say 'Yes,' Lord/ Digo 'Sí,' Señor," Blest Are We Music CD 6, "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman," Carey Landry (OCP Publications); "My Soul Rejoices," Owen Alstott (OCP Publications); "Mary's Joy," Christopher Uehlein, OSB

Preparation Before the prayer celebration, print out and photocopy the liturgy, "Queen of Peace," for each child. Discuss how God called Mary to participate in God’s plan of salvation, and that God also calls each of us. We honor Mary because she symbolizes what we hope to attain: a life of faith in this world and eternal life with God in heaven. Select a leader, Scripture reader, and another reader.

Adaptations This prayer celebration can be adapted for a May crowning which could follow the litany. Play instrumental music as the statue is crowned.
