Background Notes

Throughout history there have always been people who model Jesus through their works and words. These are justice seekers and peacemakers. Jesus taught us the importance of loving others as we love ourselves; therefore, issues of justice are central for Christians. Working for justice includes respecting the rights of others, excluding no one, and learning to resolve disagreements in ways that honor and respect the needs of all. This prayer celebration focuses on the needs of others to which justice demands response.



"Doing Right" Prayer Celebration Notes

Preparation		Before the prayer celebration, discuss peace and justice issues facing our nation, such as hunger, poverty, homelessness, and racism. Refer to Sr. Thea Bowman, who spoke out on issues of racism and injustice. Ask for examples of other holy people who reached out to others, such as Blessed Junípero Serra. Print out and photocopy the liturgy for participants.
Adaptation		Share Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words: "The time is always right to do what is right." Discuss how young people can live by these words today.
