Background Notes

Throughout history there have always been people who model Jesus through their works and words. These are justice seekers and peacemakers. Jesus taught us the importance of loving others as we love ourselves; therefore, issues of justice are central for Christians. Working for justice includes respecting the rights of others, excluding no one, and learning to resolve disagreements in ways that honor and respect the needs of all. This prayer celebration focuses on the needs of others to which justice demands response.

Materials		Prayer table, Bible, candle, music, local newspapers
Reading		Colossians 3:12–15; Psalm 5:1–8, 13

Preparation		Ask participants what the words justice and peace mean to them. Provide recent local newspapers for the group to scan for examples of justice issues within the community. Note the names of people who are working to improve the situation. Brainstorm with the group what they might do to help address one or more of these issues. Select a Scripture reader, divide the group for antiphonal reading, and practice the leader role. Print out and photocopy the liturgy, "The Call to Justice and Peace."
Adaptation		Create a display incorporating some of the news clippings that were discussed. On a separate sheet, add a brief group-generated prayer response for some; for others add a brief personal thank you to the person making a positive difference to the situation.
