Mary in Spring

Celebrating Mary in Spring
Background Notes

May has traditionally been one of the months set aside for devotion to Mary. Many communities celebrate a May crowning of Mary’s statue and other devotions in honor of the Mother of God. Mary loved and trusted God. By her 'yes’ she helped fulfill God’s plan of salvation for us. Mary is a model for us to imitate.

Preparation Before the prayer celebration, print out and photocopy the liturgy, "Mother of God," for each child. If children are unfamiliar with the Rosary, explain this devotion to them. Pray together one Hail Mary for each mystery. Select six readers. Prepare your role as leader. Refer to the "Hail Mary" in the Liturgy to help children recognize the part of the reader: "Hail Mary..." [complete first part of prayer] and their response, "Holy Mary..."[complete prayer]

Adaptations Begin the liturgy with a procession in which children bring gifts such as flowers, a crown, or other symbols to the prayer table.
