Holy Days

Holy Days-Pentecost

Background Notes

Jesus knew that unless the Father sent the Holy Spirit to the first Christians, his teachings and memory would soon fade. Only God’s Spirit would be able to keep the Gospel message burning in the hearts of Jesus’ followers. The Holy Spirit filled the hearts of the disciples and enabled them to teach and preach with great courage about Jesus of Nazareth and all that took place through his life, death, and Resurrection. The Holy Spirit fills our hearts with the same fervor.

Preparation In advance, write the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the chalkboard (wisdom, courage, understanding, right decisions, wonder and awe, knowledge, reverence). Precut or have children cut a flame out of construction paper (a traceable flame pattern is available above). Then have them choose one of the gifts listed on the board to write on their flame. These will be presented during the liturgy. Print out and photocopy the liturgy, "Gifts and Blessings." Prepare your role as leader.

Adaptation Before the prayer celebration, have children draw pictures of the gift of the Holy Spirit for which they are thankful. Display them in the worship space.
