As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." --John 13:34-35 While our society stresses individualism and being number one, the Catholic tradition teaches that human beings grow and achieve fulfillment in families and in communities. Therefore, the Church teaches that all institutions should protect and nurture human life and promote the common good. Through the Sacraments of Holy Orders and Matrimony, men and woman are called to serve the family and the common good in a special way.Bishops, priests, and deacons help make the world aware of the sacredness of human life by attending to the moral and spiritual needs of people and by helping them to recognize their true vocations as children of God. Married couples are called by God to love and serve each other, to remain faithful to each other, and to receive with love any children with whom God may bless them. It is the moral obligation of Catholic parents to pass on to their children the rich and beautiful teachings of the Catholic faith and to show their children how to live as faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
Have the children discuss the many different ways that Catholics can live out their faith. On the board, draw a chart with three columns labeled At Home, At School, and In the Parish. Have the children brainstorm ways they can serve in each of these places. Make sure to include in the discussion the necessity of attending Sunday Mass and praying. Ask the children in your group to name a priest or deacon in the parish and tell how he serves the parish community. You might also invite your parish priest to visit your class and talk to the children about the Sacraments of Holy Orders and Matrimony.
