Catholic Social Teaching -- The Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

"Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me."

--Matthew 25:40

According to Catholic social teaching, we judge a society by how its most vulnerable members are faring. The Church teaches that we have a special obligation to the poor and vulnerable to defend and promote their dignity and to ensure that they can participate fully in society.

As Christians, we are called by God to respond to the needs of all our brothers and sisters. We do this through acts of charity and by promoting a society that is politically and economically just.

Personal Reflection

Do I really see the poor in my community or do I avert my eyes? How can I improve upon my communication with the poor or homeless?
How can I improve upon my communication with the poor or homeless?

Action Opportunity

Have the children brainstorm ways they can treat the people in their everyday lives with charity and justice. Have the children also discuss making sacrifices for the good of others. Invite the children to choose two actions to do this week and then report back next week on their progress.

Quick Take

To help further the children's understanding of the Catholic social teaching "The Option for the Poor and Vulnerable," read aloud Jesus' parable of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25:31-46) and discuss it with the children.
