It is also a way to express our dignity as human beings and collaborate with God in the work of creation. Catholics can live out this social teaching through jobs and through volunteer work in the parish or community. Many people think that only jobs such as those of doctors, scientists, government officials, or entertainers are important. Sometimes, we don't notice the people who really make our everyday life easier. These include teachers, librarians, cooks, maintenance workers, trash collectors, construction workers, farmers, and factory workers. They provide us with many of the things we need and use each day. There is dignity to all work and all workers have rights.
Have the children choose a worker to observe during the coming week. Perhaps it will be a gas station attendant, nurse, receptionist, trash collector, sales person, waiter or waitress. Have them write down all the work they see the person doing that is part of their job. At your next session, have the children report on their findings. You will be able to identify some of the person's responsibilities and the child's attitude toward that person. Add a positive aspect to any negative reporting. Point out that to the children that they have witnessed only a small portion of each person's responsibilities. Pray together for the people observed. Ask children to identify the kind of work that members of their family are involved in. List them on the chalkboard. Observe the variety of occupations and then comment that every form of honest work pleases God and helps the human family. Some occupations may get more attention in society, but all work is good and important.
