This insight is basic to the Church's teachings on our responsibility to promote peace in the world. There are many ways that we too, can be instruments of God's peace. Peace begins with ourselves and with our relationships with family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and all others we meet in our everyday lives. As an instrument of peace, we treat them with respect and compassion. We are fair in our business transactions. We forgive those who hurt us. We take the first step in being reconciled with those from whom we are estranged. We join others in praying for world peace. We do our best to be courageous to bring about peace in our daily situations and relationships. So, in a real sense, world peace begins in our own hearts, in our own homes, in our own neighborhoods and in our own parishes. In this way, we are living out the Call to Family, Community, and Participation.
Ask the children to share reasons why they and others get angry. Encourage them to describe their feelings. Share that often before people feel anger, they feel hurt, afraid, or embarrassed. Sometimes a person who is hurt or embarrassed just continues to feel that way. But, sometimes a person's hurt feelings or embarrassment leads to expressions of anger. Invite volunteers to share examples of circumstances when they became angry. Encourage them to describe how they felt. Have them share what behaviors from others could have made the situation better and lessened their anger. You might share an example of your own to encourage the children to share. Jesus asks us to be peacemakers wherever we are - at home, at school, and in our neighborhood. We cannot solve problems by shouting, fighting, or calling each other names. Invite the children to think about times when they feel most peaceful. Encourage them to volunteer ways that they can help create more such peaceful times.
