We are one human family, a global family, and we have neighbors to love all around the world. Solidarity has global dimensions in our increasingly interdependent world. Our Church proclaims that the Gospel message needs to be carried to our global familyall our brothers and sisters. The message of justice that is part of that Gospel also needs to be applied to all our brothers and sisters. As Christ's disciples there are no people anywhere on earth whose suffering and oppression we can ignore. Today, many Catholic Christians are working for justice and peace by being actively involved in the Church's ministry of service. These Catholic Christians work not just to meet the needs of people in our own country, but also to meet the needs of people in developing countries as well. Such service involves compassionate action toward victims of injustice as well as more organized efforts to remove the causes of injustice from within society's institutions.
Several Web sites provide teaching tools and activity downloads to promote children's understanding of their place in and responsibilities toward the human family. They include: www.usccb.org/cchd, Catholic Campaign for Human Development, USCCB; www.crs.org/kids Catholic Relief Services Kids Site, and www.ipj-ppj.org, Institute for Peace and Justice; and www.bread.org Bread for Life. Select one of these and find a way for the children to be involved in positive actions for others. If you have a wall world map, display it. If not, draw a simple outline of North America and draw an outline of Africa next to it. Explain that the Atlantic Ocean separates the two bodies of land. Place a large X in the approximate area where your parish is. Then place an X anywhere in Africa. Point out to the children that no matter where they traveled in the world they would meet their "brothers and sisters." Add that people around the world are children of God. We all have needs wants, and fears. The world is one big family.
