Catholic Social Teaching - Life and Dignity of the Human Person

All people are sacred because we are created in the image and likeness of God. Thus, each human being is invaluable and worthy of respect as a member of the human family. Our belief in the sanctity of human life and the inherent dignity of the human person is the foundation of all the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. As parents, spouses and children, we reflect God's love and justice to the world. If we, as adults, want to help children develop a strong sense of social justice and concern for others, there is no better place to start than by remembering to foster their self-esteem and their dignity as children of God. There are many ways to affirm children including verbal praise, written affirmations, listening with full attention, and asking for and respecting their ideas.

Personal Reflection

When is the last time I affirmed a friend or a co-worker?
Do I give all children the kind of respect that I expect from them?

Action Opportunity

Guide the children to work in small groups. Have them create skits to illustrate ways that children their age can express themselves positively instead disrespectfully. Encourage them to create skits that model politeness and good manners. Encourage them to portray scenes at home, school, church, and the neighborhood.

Quick Take

Talk with the children and ask them to name individuals with whom they interact in their daily life. For example, they may name a parent or family member, catechist, priest, senior citizen, police officer, bus driver, or friend. Then, encourage them to think about and discuss the ways they show respect to each individual on the list. End by asking how they show respect for themselves.
