We are one human family. We may have racial, ethnic, economic, or ideological differences, but we are a global community. When we recognize our solidarity with all people everywhere, we commit ourselves to love and care for all God's children. We are to look for the good in others, and be slow to judge their actions and motivations. Now if we could accomplish this, first on an individual level, and then move toward global acceptance, we could expect for peace to follow. Such an attitude on our part leads to righteous, or just, actions toward others. Taking one step at a time, joining with others, the goal of the journey is possible.
Check out web sites that provide teaching tools and activities to promote children's understanding of their place in and responsibilities toward the human family. Some sites are: www.usccb.org/cchd, Catholic Campaign for Human Development, USCCB; and www.crs.org/kids Catholic Relief Services Kids Site. You may need to visit these sites on your own and then share the information with the children. If your group has access to the web, it would be advantageous to visit one of the sites together. Brainstorm with the children realistic and practical things second graders can do for people in their own parish, city, country, and world.
