Catholic Social Teaching - Life and Dignity of the Human Person

Central to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching is our belief in the sacredness of the human person. Created by God in his image, the human person is a true reflection of God's presence among us. Our human dignity comes from God, not from our race, sex, nationality, economic status, or any other personal accomplishment.

Jesus once fed a large crowd in the story of the loaves and fishes. Today we are all gathered - young and old, leaders and faithful, women and men - and prepared by the Spirit to receive God's gift of Christ's presence. This spiritual and sacramental reality of oneness can be mirrored in our day-to-day experiences of parish life. Whether or not we experience closeness on an emotional level, the spiritual reality of our oneness in the Spirit has the power to change our everyday lives if we allow the Spirit to work in us.

Personal Reflection

image Do I feel gifted because of Christ's presence in me?
Do I have the courage to allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through me?

Action Opportunity

Have the children select one person whom they will be especially kind to during the coming week. It should be someone they will see frequently, a family member or someone at school. Next session, have the children report, without identifying the person, how they felt about their actions and if the person seemed to notice. Note that because everyone is made in the image of God, everyone deserves respect and kindness.

Quick Take

Have the children discuss how Jesus treated everyone he met, from his friends to sinners to the sick, with love, compassion, and respect, and how they are called to do the same. Invite volunteers to suggest ways in which to treat others with love, compassion, and respect.
