As children of God, we are brothers and sisters called to be responsible for one another. Loving our brothers and sisters throughout the world requires that we work for peace and justice. It all begins at Baptism when we are called to be Jesus' followers by loving and caring for one another. "We are one in Christ Jesus" (based on Galatians 3:28), and are called to share with those of diverse backgrounds and beyond our parish boundaries into the world community. The Spirit, sent by Jesus, strengthens us to live as Christians. This includes reaching out to others who may come to know of Christ only through our actions. The song, "They'll Know We Are Christians," expresses this responsibility. As part of God's family, we are called to give witness to solidarity and peacemaking. This involves learning why certain conditions exist in the world and how we might become involved in changing them. Remember that our social ministries should be deeply rooted in prayer, both private and communal, for it is in prayer that we find the strength to follow Jesus as we reach out in concrete ways to help our brothers and sisters in need. Visit the Web sites of Catholic organizations, such as Catholic Relief Services (www.crs.org) and the Holy Childhood Association (www.holychildhoodusa.org) to discover ways both adults and children can help.
Talk with the children about people helping one another. Using magazines, work with the children to find pictures of people helping others. Encourage the children to draw pictures of themselves helping someone. Create a collage for display. Discuss the different ways people are able to help one another. Compose several prayers of petition for the needs of people in places around the world. Invite the children to respond with the words, "Lord, hear our prayer."
