Catholic Social Teaching - Life and Dignity of the Human Person

As Catholic Christians we have baptismal responsibilities that include treating others as well as ourselves with dignity and respect. Central to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching is our belief in the sacredness of the human person. Created in God's image, the human person is the clearest reflection of God's presence among us. Our human dignity comes from God, not from our race, sex, nationality, economic status, or any other personal accomplishment.

Experience reveals that our capacity to love and show concern tends to gradually expand into an ever-widening circle. We need to first discover that we are lovable, which enables us to love and care for ourselves. In our earliest years, many of us have been fortunate enough to arrive at this awareness through the love shown to us by our parents.

Therefore, a sense of our own self-worth is prerequisite and becomes the foundation of our ability to love and care for others. This expands to include members of the larger communities of parish, school, and neighborhood.

Personal Reflection
"God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good" (Genesis 1:31). How could I be anything but good if God is pleased with creation?

What kind of attitudes and practices does this theme of caring about oneself ask of me?

Action Opportunity

Provide each child with a large unlined index card and a crayon or marker. Attach a loop of yarn long enough to hang the card around a child's neck. Instruct each child to write a word or phrase on the card that expresses a "hidden quality" the child possesses that others may not be aware of (e.g., am kind, like to share). As an option, tell the children that they can draw pictures or symbols that express their qualities.

Allow the children to wear their cards for the remainder of the session. Suggest that each time they see another child's card, they should remember that God has given each person special qualities that we may not always see on the outside.

Quick Take

One way we can live out our belief in the sacredness of human life is by welcoming those who have recently joined our parish community with love and respect. Ask the children to think of ways they and their families can help people feel welcome at church.
