Micah 6:8

Rights and Responsibilities - Catholic Social Teaching
The Church proclaims that we all have both rights and responsibilities. Each of us has the right to life and to the things necessary for living with dignity and decency. But each of us also has the responsibility to see that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy these rights.
Basic rights include food, safe drinking water, clothing, shelter, rest, medical care, and essential social services. Corresponding to these rights are responsibilities that we have toward one another, our families, and society at-large to respect the rights of others and to work for the common good.
Awareness comes before action. Sometimes when we are unaware of the needs of others it is hard for us to believe that they even exist. That is why awareness must occur before action, pro or con.
We are fortunate to live in a free society, but such a society requires active citizen participation for it to work. Voting is the most basic requirement for all citizens. And again, awareness should come first - it is important to be an informed voter. We are called upon to be good citizens by voting and paying taxes.

Do I exercise my right and responsibility to vote?
Am I an informed voter?
Action Opportunity
Vote on something with your group. It could be for a group name, perhaps after a special saint, or even to select a book for you to read to the children. First identify the choices. It will help to narrow the choices to two or three. The children can vote by raising their hands while you tally the votes. Complete the voting by emphasizing how important it is for everyone to participate. After the experience, point out that to vote is both a right and a responsibility.
Quick Take
