Easter

Loving God, help us to recognize Christ in each other as we share our meals together. Amen. The Bread of Life
Every time members of a family share a meal, this interaction strengthens family bonds. In much the same way, a parish flourishes and becomes stronger when its members come together to celebrate the Eucharist. There is a very real connection between physical nourishment (food) and spiritual food (Eucharist). Just as people cannot live without food and love, so we cannot live without being nourished by Jesus, the Bread of Life.

Throughout the Easter season, a number of Scripture readings focus on meal scenes in which Jesus is present. In Luke 24:13-35, Jesus eats with two disciples he met on the road to Emmaus. He breaks bread with them and helps them recognize him. Another time, Jesus eats with his frightened disciples, assuring them that God will always provide for them. The Gospel writers connect the idea of the community meal with the saving presence of Christ. For early Christians, this Gospel message was a lesson on the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Family Activity

Be sure to share at least one meal together as a family during the coming week. Select a brief Scripture passage to recite before the meal, such as Luke 24: 29-35; John 21:5-14; Mark 6: 34-44; Mark 8:1-9; Luke 22:14-20; or John 13:1-15.
