The Twelve Apostles
Sometimes it can seem that the saints are larger than life, like superheroes. They defy the limitations of ordinary human beings. When we look at the apostles, however, we are continually reminded of their humanity. They were not perfect! As we know from Scripture, they had much to learn from Jesus about trusting in God and growing in holiness. For example, on the night Jesus was arrested, Peter gave in to his fears and betrayed Jesus. James and John had short tempers and were prone to arguing. Thomas needed proof before he would believe in Jesus Resurrection.
In short, the apostles themselves were ordinary people. What was amazing, however, was their personal relationship with Jesus. That is what made them extraordinary. And that is what can make each one of us extraordinaryand a sainttoo.
As parents you are called to grow in your relationship with Christ and strive every day to be holy. The word holy comes from the same root at as the word whole. Holy people are whole people. Their lives are "in balance." Through your relationship with Christ and the power of his grace, you can achieve the goal of holiness and wholeness. It is within everyones grasp, just as it was for the apostles.
