Holy Week

God our Father, help us to appreciate the selfless gift of love your Son gave to us during this holy season. Amen. The Jesus of Holy Week

What can we learn about Christian service from the Scripture readings during Holy Week? First of all, Jesus gave service humbly. He didn’t want recognition or the adulation of adoring crowds. He simply wanted to help others and to let them know how much God loved them. On Holy Thursday, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. Through this humble action, Jesus showed his disciples that they were to follow his example and live lives of love and service.

Parents are called to both love and service. We may grow weary and tired and become unsure as to whether we are making any impact on our children. But that is when we need the Jesus of Holy Week the most. He too was sometimes tired, discouraged, and afraid, yet he never stopped giving. Just as he went "the extra mile" for us, so we are to follow in his footsteps.

Family Activity

Read together John 13:1-15. Discuss Jesus’ action of providing a service for his friends. Jesus did not have to do this, but wanted his followers to understand that all are called to the service of others. Talk about the disciples’ reactions at that time. Then bring it to the present to share how each family member is called to service. What does each person see as a service that would be practical to perform during this liturgical season?
