If we compare our own Lenten journey with the Israelites long trek through the desert, we recognize the connection between water and Easter. Easter is arriving at an oasis; it is a chance to drink fresh water, wash off the dust from our bodies and clothes, and feel renewed. In a very real way, we are "reborn" at Easter. The Easter liturgy asks us to rise to new life with God.
Along with the catechumens we remember our own baptism at Easter. The priest sprinkles us with holy water, praying that it may become a living spring of Gods life within us, freeing us from sin. We then renew our baptismal promises, our personal commitment to live as disciples of Jesus.
Just as Jesus gave living water to the Samaritan woman at the well, so we are to bring living water to others. That living water brings us new life that Jesus won for us through his Resurrection.

Many areas of the United States recently experienced drought conditions that illustrate the value of water. As a family, create a "Water Usage" chart. In the first column family members are to record all their good uses of water. In the second, record all unnecessary, or wasteful, water usage. The first column listings will reinforce the importance of water. The second column can initiate discussion about how to overcome wasteful habits to assure available water for all. |
