The Church has celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family only since 1920. However, devotion to the Holy Family goes back to the sixteenth century when the Church first recognized the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as a model for all families. That recognition continues in the Church today.
Jesus earthly family models for all families the qualities and virtues that call all people to holiness. Because they lived as a family entrusted with a son, we can look to them for an example of how we should clothe ourselves in gentleness and patience, creating a family united in love.

Josepha hard-working, faith-filled, and just man whose devotion to his family is faithful and steadfast.
Marya strong woman who loves God, held a trust, and faithfulness to the will of God for herself and her family.
Jesusthe sinless Son and incarnation of God.
The Feast of the Holy Family is celebrated on the Sunday between Christmas and January 1, or on December 30 if no Sunday falls between those two dates. Celebrating this feast today calls on all modern-day families to examine how they live in a society that often discourages and undermines Christian family life.
